Meeting Student Needs
- Instruction is based on language immersion learning activities. English will be the only language spoken for instruction.
- Instruction is “communication-based” emphasizing the use of the language skillfully in meaningful contexts.
- Teachers will use small and large group instruction. Other strategies may include peer-tutoring, use of integrated technology, and cooperative learning.
- Students may be grouped based on the same or different language levels, individual needs, random distribution, and/or according to assignments or projects.
- Teachers work with individual groups (e.g. guided reading) while other students may undertake individual assignments.
- In class participation is emphasized; homework is not.
- Teachers use a wide-variety of curriculum resources to meet the goals; no published program is exclusively used.
Important Notes
- Students will be assessed regularly and receive a school grade report every quarter.
- All English learners progress at different rates. There is no guarantee that after attending the program for one year that the student will pass the ELD requirements.
- The ILP program is typically a year-long program. ELD testing will occur in the final quarter.
