By providing a high quality of education within a Christian worldview, we expect students at KIA to be:

1. Developing in the Christian faith.

2. Achieving acceptable academic standards.

3. Communicating effectively.

4. Contributing positively to society.

5. Developing critical thinking.

6. Applying self-directed learning skills.

The School and Community

Kunming International Academy (KIA) is a junior-kindergarten (4 years old) to 12th grade school located in Kunming in the Yunnan province, People’s Republic of China. The school was founded in 1994, with only 14 students, with the purpose of serving the expatriate community of Kunming.

In February 2001, KIA established a partnership with OASIS International Schools. OASIS is headquartered in Southaven, Mississippi, United States of America and supports 19 different international schools worldwide.

The enrollment at KIA has been on the rise in recent years. In 2001-2002 the student population (JK-12th) was 108. The 2005-2006 student enrollment has increased to 244. There are currently 62 students enrolled in grades 9-12. June 2006, there will be 17 students graduating from KIA, the biggest graduating class ever.

The foreign community in Kunming represents people from various parts of the world. Currently, KIA is serving about 140 families with children representing over 20 nationalities. The 46 staff members at KIA are from 9 different countries.

The expatriate population in Kunming grows each year, and thusly contributes to the rise of the KIA student enrollment. There are approximately 5,000 foreigners living in the city of Kunming currently as Chinese language students, business people, and foreign experts.

ELD Program

During the 2002-2003 school year, an English Language Development (ELD) program was implemented to meet the needs of students whose mother tongue is not English. The purpose of this program is to serve the student population that has English as their second, third or fourth language.

Students who do not use English as their first language must pass an English proficiency test for admission. KIA uses the Language Assessment Scale (LAS) to test new students. Students must reach a minimum level of speech emergence as defined by the LAS for placement in grades 1-11. Junior kindergarten and kindergarten students are not required to pass any English exam.

Curriculum

KIA uses an English-language college preparatory curriculum that is based on the American system. With the purpose and framework of a Christian worldview, KIA encourages integration of Biblical perspectives in the curriculum when deemed appropriate by the teachers.
